Pounamu or nephrite jade is found in the rivers of the South Island in New Zealand. It has a very important cultural significance to Maori who believed that Pounamu absorbs the ‘mana’ or spiritual power of its wearer. Maori also used Pounamu to make tools, ornaments and weapons. |
